The 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum has wrapped up in Russia – labelled as one of the largest and most important business events in the world. The forum was held from 5-8 June with the main theme being “The basis of a multipolarity- formation of new growth centres.” This event is amongst many that aims to serve as a platform to foster economic dialogue and collaboration in various nations. It covers a wide range of topics such as sustainable development, innovation, investment, geopolitical issues and global trade.

The SPIEF 2024 business programme includes over 150 thematic sessions as well as 100 speakers. Furthermore, the programme focusses on expanding contacts and developing business relations from many regions including the Commonwealth of Independent States countries (CIS), the Arab world, India, China, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and Latin America. Each sessions addresses specific topics that are relevant to economic interests and challenges faced by the participating regions.

The president of the Indian Business Alliance (IBA) in Russia said, “Now is the best time for the development of Indian business in Russia and the relations between the two countries in general. Many prospects are opening here now for the application of Indian skills and knowledge. Representatives of our country are actively implementing their projects here. Our pharmaceutical business is developing, and many companies are moving production to Russia. Despite the legislation in this country, all the problems faced by business are solvable.”

BRICS countries are tasked with ensuring global food security discussions at the event. On June 7, experts explored the different financial and resource support practices used by the international and Russian business community in the discussion “The Beginning of the Future. How foundations Can Work Together To Make BRICS stronger.” The forum has become a significant feature in the global calendar since it was first held in 1997. From then onwards, it was held annually and since 2005, witnessed participation by Russian President of the Federation which highlighted the importance of the event.

The 2021 forum was the first major business event to return to an offline format after disruptions from the COVID 19 pandemic. This indeed signified the resilience and adaptability of this event in facing unprecedented challenges. SPIEF serves as a powerful and valuable platform for networking, business expansion opportunities and dialogue. It allows participants to engage with decision makers and exposes them to a world of partnership facilitations and investment opportunities.

The exchange of ideas and collaborations at events like these is crucial for economic growth and empowerment. Additionally, this serves a platform to attract potential investors and top media outlets. In SPIEF 2023, more than 17 000 participants from 130 different countries, took part in both the online and offline platforms. The signing of more than 900 agreements totalling RUB 3.860 billion further highlights the forum’s role in enabling business opportunities, investment options and facilitating partnerships.

Representatives from different countries including Italy and Spain, were involved in the event signifying the forum’s international reach and potential to enable cross-border cooperation and trade. These agreements are essential in boosting economic growth and strengthening relationships between business and nations. Such forums provide valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, networking and fostering relationships that can lead to substantial outcomes in terms of investment projects and policy initiatives. They aid in the advancement of economic development and the growth of international cooperation in a world that is becoming more internet connected.

This combination of undated handout pictures provided by the US Department of Defense created on January 29, 2024 shows US soldiers, from L to R, Sgt. William Rivers, Spc. Breona Moffett and Spc. Kennedy Sanders who were killed in a drone attack on their base in remote northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border, on January 28, 2024. The White House vowed Monday to respond decisively to an attack in Jordan it blames on Iran-backed militants, in which a drone slammed into a military base and killed three Americans while troops were in their beds. The casualties -- the first US military deaths in an attack in the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7 -- raised fears of an escalating conflict, as fighting rages in Gaza and related violence plagues other parts of the region.
