An Olympic-themed exhibition of Chinese art has graced the elegant halls of Les Invalides in Paris, creating a cultural bridge between the two nations. More than 200 exquisite artworks from China are on display, showcasing a rich tapestry of creativity that spans centuries and genres.
The Fusion of Strength and Beauty
The opening ceremony was a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Shen Haixiong, vice minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and president of China Media Group (CMG), emphasised the significance of this event. He eloquently stated that sports and art are vital components of human culture, and their beauty complements each other. Indeed, the brushstrokes of a master calligrapher can evoke the same awe as an athlete’s graceful leap.
A Historic Cultural Event
As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, this exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two countries. David Lappartient, president of the French Olympic Committee, expressed his delight at ushering in such a historic cultural event during the year of the Paris Olympics. The art on display interprets the fusion of strength and beauty, a theme that resonates not only with athletes but also with artists who wield their creativity as a force for good.
Diverse Art Forms
Visitors to Les Invalides are treated to a diverse array of artistic expressions. Amongst the treasures are:
Chinese Ink-and-Wash Paintings: These delicate works capture the essence of nature, from mist-shrouded mountains to serene rivers. Each brushstroke tells a story of ancient wisdom and contemplation.
Calligraphy: The unique art of Chinese characters comes alive in elegant strokes. Sun Xiaoyun, chairperson of the China Calligraphers Association, reminds us that calligraphy extends beyond aesthetics, it embodies self-cultivation and the pursuit of inner harmony.
Oil Paintings: Contemporary Chinese artists blend tradition with innovation, creating vivid canvases that reflect their perspectives on life, society, and the human condition.
Sculptures: Wu Weishan, curator of the National Art Museum of China, contributes a sculpture featuring the renowned ancient Chinese poet Li Bai (701-762). Li Bai’s spirit, like that of the athletes competing in the Olympics, transcends time and place.
A Cultural Dialogue
Vincent Labrune, president of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, draws parallels between football and art. Both reveal the beauty of strength and passion. Through this exhibition, he hopes that more French people will appreciate the charm of Chinese art, a treasure that enriches human civilisation.
The showcase, aptly named “From Beijing to Paris: Olympic Tour of Chinese and French Artists,” is open to the public from May 7 to 18. As visitors wander through the galleries, they become part of a cultural dialogue that transcends borders, celebrating the shared values of peace, friendship, and creativity. This is a perfect build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as the Olympic torch moves closer to its destination on the 26th of July.
