As the world marks World Press Freedom Day , the global spotlight turns to Santiago, Chile, where the prestigious Gabriela Mistral Centre will host this year’s commemorative event. Under the theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis,” the conference seeks to underscore the indispensable role of journalism and freedom of expression in addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Crucial focus on environmental crisis:

With the planet grappling with urgent environmental issues, from climate change to biodiversity loss, the conference aims to spotlight the critical role of journalism in raising awareness, fostering accountability, and driving action. By amplifying the voices of communities affected by environmental degradation and shedding light on pressing ecological concerns, journalists play a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and driving positive change.

Emphasis on press freedom and gender equality:

Central to the discussions at the event is the nexus between press freedom, access to information, and gender equality in ensuring a sustainable future. Recognising the importance of diverse perspectives and inclusive narratives, the conference underscores the need for robust protections for journalists, particularly those operating in challenging environments where their safety and security are at risk.

Honouring courageous journalists:

One of the highlights of the conference is the awarding of the prestigious UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. This esteemed accolade recognises journalists who have demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment to upholding press freedom, often at great personal risk. By honouring their unwavering dedication to truth and transparency, the prize celebrates the invaluable contributions of journalists in safeguarding democracy and human rights.

Bringing together diverse voices:

The conference serves as a rallying point for media partners, academia, civil society, and policymakers to come together and chart a path forward in addressing the environmental crisis. Through panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, participants will explore innovative approaches to environmental journalism, harnessing the transformative power of reliable information to

protect the planet, foster sustainable development, and strengthen democracies worldwide.
