Kung Fu, or Gong Fu or Wushu, is a traditional Chinese martial art encompassing many fighting techniques, skills, and practices.

Wushu, which originated in China, is a sport that has developed over thousands of years.

Nowadays, it is gaining more in popularity both in China and around the world and has also become part of big events including the Asian Games.

CGTN reporter Cao Bing went to a university in Beijing that offers a major in Wushu, to appreciate the beauty of the sport and to learn some of the hidden stories behind it.

The Chinese kung fu is much more well known as Wushu, or martial arts in China

Through many years, Chinese WuShu became more developed and popular.
People can find powerful skills and fight scenes in Kungfu films splendid performances on stages and fierce competition in sports events.

But in China, there is so much more to kung fu.

“Martial arts can be divided into four categories. Traditional martial arts, and competitive martial arts, such as competitions in the Asian Games or World Championships, which is leading the direction of martial arts development,” said Wushu teacher Zhao Qingjian.

“Wushu for fitness, such as Taichi; and the fourth category is the martial arts in films, televisions and on stages…So I believe it is safe to say Wushu has become an authentic part of Chinese culture, portraying a healthy lifestyle nurturing both body and mind,” Zhao added.

Zhao says as it has gained widespread appreciation around the world, it offers an in-depth window into Chinese culture.

“Wushu is cool, often exhilarating and astonishing to watch, with mesmerizing defensive moves…but as a unique Chinese sport or cultural art which has developed over thousands of years, Wushu also contains profound spirit, wisdom and philosophy,” said Beijing resident, Cao Bing.

The term “Kung Fu” doesn’t refer to a single specific martial art but is a general term that can be applied to various Chinese martial arts styles.

Kung Fu techniques include strikes, kicks, punches, blocks, and various forms of self-defense. It emphasizes physical prowess, mental discipline, balance, flexibility, and spiritual development.

Kung Fu has a rich history and is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, with many different styles and schools, such as Shaolin, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and many others.
