Tamil New Year, fondly known as Puthandu, paints the streets of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with hues of tradition, family bonding, and cultural splendour. As the sun rises on the first day of Chithirai in the Tamil Calendar, which typically corresponds to April 14 on the Gregorian Calendar, Tamil-speaking communities around the world come together to usher in the new year with exuberance and joy.
At the heart of the celebrations lie cherished traditions passed down through generations.
Homes are adorned with vibrant kolam designs, intricately crafted from coloured rice powder, symbolising prosperity and auspicious beginnings. A symbolic tray, resplendent with mangoes, bananas, jackfruit, betel leaves, coins, and mirrors, adorns household altars, reflecting abundance and blessings for the year ahead.

A wonderful thing about the Tamil New Year celebrations in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, today was that the organisers provided a delicious, free, vegetarian banana leaf meal for more than 1,000 people. This kind of action warms my heart and gives me hope. pic.twitter.com/wvDcSyabsw

Beyond the borders of India, the echoes of Tamil New Year resonate in the vibrant celebrations of Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, underscoring the universality of its cultural significance.
