“We are very excited to announce the upcoming launch of News1 and Sport1, our two new channels offered by the South African government’s signal distributor Sentech.”
“Sentech approached us and was delighted with the content we offer. This is a wonderful opportunity for our growing network of journalists and anyone out there who wants to join us in providing responsible, demanding and exciting journalism,”.
“Our broadcast reach continues to grow,” said Bester, named recently the Best Global Media Production CEO of 2024. Bester has also been earmarked as one of Africa’s Top 10 Innovative CEOs to watch this year. Bester is the CEO of BGTN.
“News1 will offer viewers uncensored, often under-reported, news stories from across the globe, and particularly from South Africa and Africa. Sport1 will do much the same. While we don’t intend to compete with the likes of SuperSport, there is a need for coverage of homegrown sports that are often underfunded and not paid enough attention to,” said Bester.
News1 and Sport 1 will be broadcast on Sentech’s Freevision Play, an over-the-top (OTT) video streaming platform that is offered free of charge to South African residents. Launched in June, Freevision Play promises a range of video and audio channels. Described by Sentech as a “ground-breaking OTT video streaming platform”, Freevision Play is available to everyone with an internet connection and can be accessed via smartphones, tablets and smart televisions.
Freevision Play is available through freevisionplay.co.za. A Freevision Play app is also available for major smartphone operating systems.
