Marrakech has assumed the esteemed title of the Capital of Culture of the Islamic World for 2024.

Despite facing the challenges of a devastating earthquake in September, the city, recognised in UNESCO’s intangible heritage of humanity, continues to captivate global visitors with its rich history and cultural allure.

The Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, lauded Marrakech as a city of unparalleled beauty and cultural significance.

He expressed that the designation is a fitting tribute to Marrakech’s natural and historical richness, as well as its unique geographical features.

Describing the city as a hub of life, spirit, and harmony, Bensaid outlined the plans for a series of events throughout the year, encompassing cultural, heritage, artistic, and intellectual activities in collaboration with the local civil society in Marrakech.

He emphasised that this cultural year’s success relies on the active involvement of local stakeholders, including intellectuals and artists.

Dr. Salim Almalik, Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, underscored the opportunity to showcase Marrakech’s historical civilization and rich culture during its tenure as the Capital of Culture of the Islamic World.

The city’s Andalusian and Islamic architecture, evident in mosques and palaces, stands as a testament to its cultural depth and uniqueness.

Despite being rattled by the Al Haouz earthquake, Marrakech has quickly recovered and maintained its status as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

Idriss Ben Yacoub, a Moroccan Cultural Heritage Researcher, highlighted Marrakech’s resilience, positioning it as the first tourist destination in Morocco and emphasizing its global fame.

The designation as the capital of culture in the Islamic world is an additional acknowledgement of Marrakech’s international influence and its pivotal role in civilisation and culture.

The year-long celebrations under the theme “Marrakech, capital of culture in the Islamic world” are not only an opportunity to recognize the city’s cultural richness but also to showcase its tourist attractions, intangible heritage, and archaeological sites.

As Marrakech takes center stage on the global cultural platform, it is poised to strengthen its position as one of the world’s premier destinations, inviting visitors to experience its beauty, history, and unique charm.
