Though the mercury hit 42 ºC on Sunday, The Alerta Rio weather system registered it as way higher on the heat index, as it reflects what the temperature feels like, taking humidity into account.
The previous record, set in November last year, was 59.7 ºC on the heat index.

As parts of the country battle the heat, the centre-south of the country is bracing for heavy rains and storms this week, with the weather information agency MetSul issuing warnings of an intense cold front with torrential rains and possible gales.
