Ricardo Nunes has been reelected as the mayor of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. This victory was confirmed by Datafolha, a well-known polling agency, based on exit polls from the election.

Strong Support from the Governor

Nunes received important support from Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas. Following the municipal elections, de Freitas is seen as a leading figure for Brazil’s right wing. He could be the next candidate to follow Jair Bolsonaro, the former president who cannot run for office for eight years due to legal issues.

A Loss for the Left

The defeat of Guilherme Boulos, the leftist candidate, is a significant blow for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This election result suggests that voters in Brazil are shifting towards right-leaning candidates, especially as the country looks ahead to the 2026 presidential election.

Mayor Nunes’ reelection is more than just a personal win; it shows changing political trends in Brazil. As the political landscape evolves, these shifts will be important for local and national politics in the future.
