The Brazilian government has officially announced that the upcoming BRICS summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025. Brazil will assume the presidency of the BRICS group of developing economies through 2025 and aims to prioritize global governance reforms and stronger cooperation among Global South countries. This announcement was made in a statement from Brazil’s federal government.
BRICS, originally founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded its membership by including South Africa in 2010. The group’s goal is to offer an alternative to the Group of Seven (G7), which represents the world’s leading industrialized nations. In recent developments, BRICS further expanded its membership with the inclusion of Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has been invited to join, and countries like Turkiye, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership. Several other nations have also shown interest in joining.
The bloc recently welcomed Indonesia as a full member and Nigeria as a “partner country,” a new designation introduced during the 2024 summit in Kazan. Brazil has announced that partner countries are invited to participate in the upcoming summit, with the possibility of attending additional meetings based on consensus among BRICS members.
Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira expressed that the summit would lead to “crucial decisions for development, cooperation, and improving the lives of all inhabitants of these countries.” The focus will be on advancing mutual development and strengthening the bloc’s influence on the global stage.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they take actions that undermine the U.S. dollar. This tension comes amid BRICS leaders’ growing commitment to establishing an alternative payment system that operates independently of the U.S. dollar. Trump’s recent comments included confusion about China’s membership in the bloc, despite China being one of the founding members of BRICS.
The 2025 BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro is shaping up to be a critical event for global diplomacy, as the bloc continues to strengthen its voice and promote cooperation among emerging economies.
