The ITU Digital Skills Forum 2024, held from September 17 to 19 in Manama , Bahrain, marked a significant milestone in the global effort to bridge digital skills gaps. Hosted by Bahrain, this event brought together nearly 700 participants from 44 countries, including policymakers, practitioners, and experts in digital skills and digital transformation.

Event Overview

The forum, themed “Developing Skills for Digital Transformation,” was inaugurated by Mohamed bin Thamer Al Kaabi, Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications. The event featured a blend of in-person and virtual sessions, making it accessible to a global audience. The forum’s agenda was packed with discussions on digital transformation, skill gaps, and national digital skills frameworks.

Key Highlights

Digital Transformation Capacity Development Initiative:

This initiative, a collaboration between the ITU, UNDP, and the EU, aims to enhance digital literacy and foster a digitally competent global society.

The initiative was well-received, with many participants praising its potential to make a significant impact on global digital skills development.

Bahrain’s Role:

Philip Marnick, Director General of Bahrain’s TRA, highlighted Bahrain’s pivotal role in supporting international efforts to bridge digital skills gaps.

Bahrain’s active membership among the 193 ITU states and its commitment to inclusive and meaningful connectivity were emphasized as key factors in its selection as the host.

Global Participation:

The forum attracted a diverse group of participants, including H.E. Mr. Bonjean Rodrigue Mbanza, Minister of Digital Economy and New Information Technologies of Gabon, and Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau at ITU.

The high level of international participation underscored the global importance of digital skills development.

Critical Analysis

The ITU Digital Skills Forum 2024 was a resounding success in many aspects, but it also highlighted some areas for improvement:

Strengths

Comprehensive Agenda: The forum covered a wide range of topics, from digital skills development to policy frameworks, providing a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities in the digital skills landscape.

Collaborative Initiatives: The introduction of the Digital Transformation Capacity Development initiative showcased the power of international collaboration in addressing global challenges.

Areas for Improvement:

Accessibility: While the hybrid format was a step in the right direction, some participants noted that the virtual sessions could have been more interactive and engaging.

Follow-Up Actions: There was a call for more concrete follow-up actions and measurable outcomes to ensure that the discussions translate into real-world impact. The ITU Digital Skills Forum 2024 in Bahrain was a landmark event that successfully brought together global leaders to address the pressing issue of digital skills gaps. The forum’s comprehensive agenda, high level of international participation, and collaborative initiatives were its standout features. However, there is room for improvement in making virtual sessions more engaging and ensuring that discussions lead to tangible outcomes.
