South African gymnastics sensation Caitlin Rooskrantz has announced her withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Olympics following a significant injury. The 22-year-old gymnast, who made history as the first South African to win a gold medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in 2019, suffered a severe ankle injury during training.

Rooskrantz’s decision to pull out of the Olympics is a significant blow to South Africa’s gymnastics team, as she was expected to be a strong contender in the uneven bars and contribute to the team’s overall performance. Her coach, Ilse Pelser, confirmed that the injury would require several months of rehabilitation, making it impossible for Rooskrantz to compete at Olympic level.

In a heartfelt statement, Rooskrantz expressed her disappointment but remained optimistic about her recovery. “Not the way I envisioned my games coming to an end. Although my time in the competition was cut short due to foot injuryt, I’m filled with so much gratitude and pride. As disappointed as I am, this journey was never just about me or one moment – it was about inspiring a nation and paving the way for future generations.

I’m overwhelmed with love and support from my country, sponsors, family, friends, and fellow athletes. Your encouragement and belief in me means the world! Gymnastics SA is on the map, and I couldn’t be happier about the strides we’ve made”.

Rooskrantz’s withdrawal highlights the rigorous demands of gymnastics and the dedication required to compete at the highest level. The South African gymnastics community has rallied around her, offering support and encouragement as she begins her journey to recovery.

Rooskrantz, one of the first gymnasts of colour to represent South Africa at the Olympic Games, debuted at the Tokyo Olympics alongside Naveen Davies. Throughout her career, she has earned accolades such as a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and multiple gold medals at the World Cup. She says missing the chance to compete for a medal in Paris after all her hard work is heartbreaking.
