In a groundbreaking move towards futuristic transportation, Saudi Arabia has introduced the world’s first self-driving air taxi service during the Hajj season. Licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority, this initiative marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to integrate advanced mobility solutions.

First Self-Driving Air Taxi Service

The newly launched self-driving air taxi service is designed to transport pilgrims between holy sites, facilitate emergency travel, and deliver goods. This pioneering service employs the EH216-S eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of carrying two passengers. The EH216-S is powered by electric propulsion systems, enabling vertical take-off and landing.

Inaugural Launch Event

The launch event, held on June 12, 2024, in Makkah, featured key figures such as Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), and Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Services. Their presence underscored the importance of this innovative development in Saudi Arabia’s transportation sector.

Enhancing Emergency Response and Logistics

The self-driving air taxis are expected to significantly enhance emergency response capabilities by rapidly deploying medical equipment and personnel to areas in need. Beyond passenger transport, these aerial taxis will support logistical operations by efficiently delivering goods and supplies during the Hajj season.

Alignment with Saudi Vision 2030

This initiative aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030 objectives, aiming to modernise the transportation sector and promote innovative solutions. By introducing self-driving air taxis, Saudi Arabia is taking a crucial step towards integrating futuristic transportation into everyday life and special events like the pilgrimage.

Setting New Global Benchmarks

Saudi Arabia’s introduction of self-driving aerial taxis sets new benchmarks in the global transportation industry. This pioneering effort showcases the country’s proactive stance in embracing cutting-edge technologies to meet the evolving needs of its population and visitors.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia plans to expand the self-driving air taxi service to other regions, including the futuristic city of NEOM, located north of Mecca. This expansion will further solidify the Kingdom’s position as a leader in advanced air mobility.

Overall, the introduction of self-driving aerial taxis during the Hajj season represents a significant advancement in modernising transportation in Saudi Arabia. It enhances pilgrim mobility, supports emergency and logistical operations, and highlights the country’s commitment to embracing and implementing innovative technological solutions.
