Gaza: The brutal onslaught
On October 7th, Khan Younis, a city in the contested Gaza Strip, witnessed the horrifying spectacle of Israeli bombs falling from the sky.
At least 232 people died in that attack and wounded 1,697 others.
The assault continued into the night, leaving the citizens in despair and turmoil.

An unexpected military manoeuvre
This escalation came in the wake of a surprising move by Hamas on Saturday.
The attack marked one of Israel’s deadliest days in decades, claiming over 700 lives.
The spokesperson for Hamas in Gaza, Hazem Qassem, described the surprise military operation as a strategic shift and a continuation of “the Palestinian national struggle” — responding to the daily occupation attacks and aiming to liberate Palestinian prisoners.
He stated, “The Qassam Brigades can surprise the occupation every time with new capabilities.” The group alleges it is holding over 100 Israeli hostages, some being high-ranking officers.
Response and repercussions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced a stern warning against the attacks and highlighted preparations for what he anticipates to be “a long and difficult war.”
Amidst the escalating violence, the international community weighs in. China, a significant player in the Brics countries, has issued a call for an immediate ceasefire via its foreign ministry office in Israel.
Yuval Waks, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Israel in China, reflected on bilateral relations, expressing that while both nations have “good bilateral relations” and an increasing trade volume, Israel expected a stronger condemnation from the Chinese government.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasised that the pathway out of the ongoing crisis involves implementing a two-state solution, including establishing an independent Palestinian state.
