Longevity noodles symbolise a wish for a long and prosperous life for the person celebrating their birthday. The noodles are usually uncut and can be very long, signifying longevity and a wish for a long, healthy, and happy life. The longer the noodles, the better the symbolism.

How the noodles are prepared and served varies based on regional preferences and family traditions. They are often stir-fried or boiled and can be served with various toppings, vegetables, meats, or flavourful soup.

Eating birthday noodles is a significant cultural tradition in Chinese communities, underscoring the importance of family, longevity, and well wishes for the birthday celebrant. It’s an integral part of Chinese birthday celebrations and is deeply rooted in cultural beliefs and customs.

Ingredients:

  • 250g longevity noodles (thin, uncooked egg noodles)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup sliced vegetables (e.g., carrots, bell peppers, bok choy)
  • 1 cup sliced cooked chicken, shrimp, or tofu (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce (for color)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Green onions, sliced, for garnish

Instructions:

Prepare the Noodles

  • Cook the longevity noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce

In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar. Set aside.

Stir-Fry the Vegetables

  • Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds.
  • Add the sliced vegetables and stir-fry for a few minutes until they are slightly tender but still crisp.

Add Protein (optional)

  • Stir-fry protein until cooked through.

Combine Noodles and Sauce

  • Add the cooked noodles to the wok, followed by the prepared sauce. Toss everything together to combine and evenly coat the noodles and vegetables with the sauce.

Season and Garnish

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions.

Serve:

  • Transfer the noodles and vegetables to a serving platter and serve immediately.

These birthday noodles symbolize longevity and are a delicious way to celebrate a special occasion. Customize the recipe by adding your favorite vegetables or protein to suit your taste preferences. Enjoy!
