Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, formerly Namibia’s vice president, has been sworn in as the country’s new leader.

This comes after Namibia’s sitting president, Dr. Hage G. Geingob, died in his home after a long battle with cancer.

“He departed from us on Sunday, February 4, 2024, around 00:04 at Lady Pohamba Hospital, where he was under the care of his medical team.

“Beside him were his beloved wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and their children,” said the presidency in a statement.

“Despite the dedicated efforts of his medical team, who worked tirelessly to ensure the President’s recovery, we must sadly acknowledge that President Geingob has left us. This is a moment of great loss for the Namibian nation”.

Shortly after his passing, Mbumba was sworn in to take his place, while Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was appointed and sworn in as the new Vice President of the Republic of Namibia.

“The Presidency would like to congratulate Dr Mbumba on his appointment as President of the Republic of Namibia and H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on her appointment and swearing-in as Vice President of the Republic of Namibia.”
