Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the vice foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran in Beijing on Friday.
This marked a significant step forward in the diplomatic efforts to normalise ties between the two Middle Eastern nations.
The meeting aimed to review the progress of a deal brokered by China earlier this year, wherein Saudi Arabia and Iran committed to normalising their relations.

During the discussions, Minister Wang Yi proposed three essential suggestions to enhance bilateral relations. Firstly, he emphasised the importance of Saudi Arabia and Iran adhering to reconciliation, urging both sides to continue dialogue and consultation to build mutual trust.
Secondly, Wang welcomed efforts to improve relations and encouraged cooperation in various sectors such as economy, trade, security, and people-to-people exchanges.
Thirdly, he stressed the need to eliminate external interference, asserting that the fate of the Middle East should rest in the hands of the region’s people rather than becoming a geopolitical arena for great powers.

In a statement, Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s support for the independent development of the Middle East, urging the nations involved to work together to address regional security issues.
He affirmed China’s commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia and Iran in improving relations, viewing the trilateral meeting as an opportunity to inject new impetus into the friendship between the two nations and contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East.
Vice foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia and Iran reported their relations progressing positively. The news also hinted at the possibility of regular flights being a crucial step towards restoring ties, with negotiations for direct routes between the two countries, including travel for pilgrims and non-religious trips, reportedly underway.
