In a not-so-surprising twist, Argentina, under President-elect Javier Milei has decided to opt out of joining the BRICS bloc. The decision was announced by incoming Foreign Minister Diana Mondino and signals a significant shift in Argentina’s foreign policy under Milei.

While countries like Pakistan and Nigeria are queuing up to join BRICS in Phase Two of the expansion, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly sent a personal invitation to Argentina for membership.

The country was invited to join the expanding BRICS bloc on January 1, 2024, alongside other new member states such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Bye, bye, bye BRICS

The rejection comes as part of Milei’s broader plan to overhaul Argentina’s foreign relations, departing from the country’s anticipated alignment with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Milei’s team emphasised that the decision is not only a divergence from the BRICS alliance but also a strategic move to redefine Argentina’s relationships with its key trading partners, Brazil and China.

The President-elect, known for his previous criticisms of China and threats to sever diplomatic ties, seems to be charting a new course for the country’s international engagements.

While the rejection may have raised eyebrows, Milei has recently tempered his rhetoric concerning China since winning the election, indicating a nuanced approach to diplomatic relations.

As Argentina steers away from the BRICS alliance, the international community eagerly awaits Milei’s unfolding foreign policy agenda and its implications for the South American nation on the global stage.

Who is Javier Milei

Background in economics

Javier Milei has a strong background in economics, having taught university courses in macroeconomics, economic growth, microeconomics, and mathematics for economists. He has also written over 50 academic papers and gained experience as a head economist and senior economist in various institutions.

Controversial persona

Milei is known for his controversial and outspoken persona. He frequently uses profanity, and his statements have stirred controversy. Critics have nicknamed him “El Loco” (the madman), and he has been compared to former US President Donald Trump, who is also known for his unconventional and direct communication style.

Far-right political stance

Milei is associated with far-right political ideologies. His political platform includes drastic economic proposals such as abandoning the local currency (the peso) in favour of the US dollar, dismantling the central bank to address inflation concerns, cutting welfare payments, and reducing bureaucracy by closing several ministries, including those of culture, women, health, and education.

Diverse policy proposals

In addition to economic changes, Milei’s political agenda includes proposals related to gun laws, abortion, and the sale and purchase of human organs. He advocates for loosening gun laws, abolishing abortion, and allowing the commercialization of human organs.

Election victory amid economic crisis:

Milei’s victory in the presidential election comes at a time when Argentina is facing a deep economic crisis. The country is grappling with annual inflation rates of 143%, and a significant portion of the population (40%) is living in poverty. His inauguration is scheduled for December 10, 2023, and he is expected to serve a four-year term.
