It’s a time of joy, unity, and reflection, and here’s everything you need to know about this luminous celebration. This year, the main Diwali celebrations will occur on Sunday, 12 November.

Historical and Religious Significance

Diwali’s roots can be traced back to ancient India. The festival’s origins are multifaceted, with various mythological tales attached to it. One of the most prominent stories is the return of Lord Rama, an avatar of the god Vishnu, to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the lankan King Ravana. The people of Ayodhya celebrated his return by lighting lamps and fireworks, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Date and duration

Diwali typically falls in October or November, depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. It extends over five days, with each day having its unique customs and rituals.

Traditions and customs

The traditions vary across regions, but lighting oil lamps and candles, decorating homes with rangoli (colourful patterns), exchanging gifts, and wearing new clothes are common customs. Temples and homes are adorned with colourful lights and candles, creating a breathtaking visual display.

Fireworks and sweets

Fireworks are an integral part of Diwali, signifying the victory of light over darkness. Dazzling fireworks displays illuminate the sky, and families gather to watch the spectacle. Families exchange sweets, known as “mithai,” adding a delightful flavour to the celebrations.

Spiritual Significance

Diwali is a time for spiritual reflection and renewal. Many Hindus pray to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, seeking her blessings for prosperity and well-being. It’s also a time to strengthen familial bonds and forgive past grievances, promoting unity and harmony.

Diwali is not just a festival; it’s a celebration of light, hope, and the triumph of good over evil. Its rich cultural and spiritual significance transcends borders and brings people together in joy and unity. Whether you’re a part of the Hindu community or just interested in learning about different cultures, Diwali is an opportunity to embrace the beauty and diversity of our world’s traditions.
