South Africa hosts its third BRICS Sherpas meeting to deliberate on the exciting expansion route which was adopted by the BRICS Heads of states in 2022. The closed-door meeting was held in Durban at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

With many countries having applied to join BRICS and some expressing the interest to join, everyone’s eyes are trained on the upcoming BRICS summit.

The delegates discussed the benchmark which will determine the criteria of countries that’ll join BRICS. The Sherpas are not at liberty to share details of their agreed upon criteria until their respective countries Foreign Affairs Ministers meet and deliberate on the matter.

Professor Anil Sooklal, who is the South African BRICS Sherpa, mentioned in his press briefing session that they’ve extended an invitation to all Africa Heads of States. This is an initiative to incorporate South Africa’s Africa focus agenda which is dedicated at including and collaborating with African States.

This highly anticipated prestigious event has attracted a lot of controversy, making it the top conversation of 2023. The BRICS Summit will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre 22 – 24 August and preparations are underway. South African BRICS Sherpa, Prof. Sooklal said “we envision a substantive outcome from the Summit”.
