About BRICS
BRICS is an acronym for the powerful grouping of the world’s leading emerging market economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The 15th BRICS Summit took place in Sandton in Johannesburg between 22-24 August.
Previous summits were held in:
- Yekaterinburg, Russia, on 16 June 2009
- Brasilia, Brazil, on 15 April 2010
- Sanya, China, on 14 April 2011
- New Delhi, India, on 29 March 2012.
The first BRICS Summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, where elected leaders of the four countries formally declared their membership of the BRIC economic bloc. South Africa was invited to join the bloc in December 2010, resulting in BRICS.
BRICS has, since its inception, had a positive effect on the international system. BRICS countries have individually emerged to assume new economic rankings.
