In the bustling urban tapestry of Hong Kong, a new initiative has emerged to reveal the city’s hidden narratives and architectural marvels. City Unseen, an educational group established in 2023, offers a fresh perspective on urban exploration. Their first guided tour of Prince Edward is not just a journey through the streets of Kowloon; it’s an invitation to witness the city’s evolution and the stories etched in its corners.

Origins of City Unseen

City Unseen was born out of a desire to delve into the lesser-known aspects of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. Founded by Carine Lai, an urban design researcher, the group aims to uncover the quirks and adaptations that residents have made to their city spaces. Lai’s deep connection to Prince Edward, having lived there all her life, makes her the perfect narrator for this area’s story.

What Makes the Tour Unique

What sets City Unseen’s tour apart is its focus on the “ghost staircase,” outdoor gyms, and other overlooked features that tell the tale of the city’s organic development. The tour is a blend of historical insights, personal narratives, and architectural analysis, providing a comprehensive understanding of how the city’s residents interact with their environment.

What can be expected?

Travellers embarking on City Unseen’s tour can expect an approximately 90-minute walk filled with discoveries. They will learn about the concept of hostile architecture, see how bollards intended to deter the homeless have become communal gathering spots, and explore buildings that, at first glance, might seem unremarkable but hide fascinating histories.

Attraction to look forward to:

Ghost Staircase: An intriguing architectural remnant that sparks conversations about the city’s development and the stories behind such overlooked structures.

Outdoor Gym: A space that reflects the community’s adaptation of urban spaces for health and social interaction.

Tung Choi Street: Known for its street food and vibrant market life, this street is also home to bollards that have been repurposed by residents, turning hostile architecture into communal gathering spots.

Six-Storey Pink Building: At first glance, it may seem unremarkable, but this building is a starting point for discussions about the neighbourhood’s character and evolution.

Flower Market: A colourful and fragrant attraction, showcasing a wide variety of plants and blooms, and reflecting the local culture and commerce.

Yuen Po Street Bird Garden: A charming spot for bird lovers and those interested in the local pet trade and aviary culture.

Goldfish Market: A unique attraction where visitors can see a variety of fish and aquatic plants, highlighting the local love for these pets.

Temple Street Night Market: A bustling evening market offering a sensory feast of sights, sounds, and tastes, perfect for experiencing the local nightlife.

Tour Highlights

Some of the highlights of the tour include:

Historical Narratives: The tour provides a deep dive into the historical context of Prince Edward, exploring landmarks and sharing stories from different eras that have shaped the neighbourhood.

Architectural Gems: Participants will discover architectural marvels, from colonial-era buildings to modern-day structures, each with its own story and significance.

Cultural Insights: The tour offers insights into the local culture, traditions, and practices, highlighting how these elements are reflected in the urban landscape.

Interactive Experience: City Unseen encourages interaction, allowing travellers to engage with the environment and even meet local residents who share personal anecdotes.

Photography Opportunities: There are numerous opportunities for photography enthusiasts to capture the unique urban aesthetics and vibrant street life of Prince Edward.

Sustainable Urban Living: The tour sheds light on sustainable practices within the city, showcasing community gardens, recycling initiatives, and other green efforts.

Art and Creativity: Discover hidden art installations, graffiti, and street art that contribute to the neighbourhood’s creative atmosphere.

These highlights showcase the multifaceted nature of the tour, ensuring that participants have a rich and engaging experience as they walk through the streets of Prince Edward.  City Unseen’s first guided tour of Prince Edward is more than just a walk; it’s an educational experience that peels back the layers of Hong Kong’s urban environment.

It’s an opportunity for travellers to engage with the city’s history and its present, to see beyond the skyscrapers and into the heart of a community that continuously shapes its space. This tour is a must for anyone looking to understand the city beyond the usual tourist trails.
