Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has inked a landmark deal worth 200 million Saudi riyals ($53.33 million) with Italian hospitality firm Arsenale Group, marking the kingdom’s entry into the realm of luxury train travel.

CNN reported the move is meant to enhance tourism following the historic opening of its doors to international visitors in 2019; Saudi Arabia is embarking on an ambitious journey into luxury travel.

Among its notable investments is a $500 billion model city in the northwest desert.

Scheduled to debut in late 2025, the “Dream of the Desert” luxury train promises opulent “train cruise” experiences spanning from Riyadh to Qurayyat, showcasing the kingdom’s breathtaking desert vistas and the city of Hail along the 1,300-kilometer route.

Inspired by Saudi tradition and style, the train will boast 40 fully customised luxury cabins, with bookings set to open by year-end.

Designed by Arsenale, CEO Paolo Barletta anticipates the train’s Italian construction will commence soon, underscoring the company’s excitement for this groundbreaking venture.

Saudi Arabia’s foray into luxury train travel mirrors global trends as discerning travelers seek sustainable alternatives and immersive experiences.

The kingdom’s investment aligns with a broader international movement, exemplified by initiatives like US President Joe Biden’s $30 billion rail pledge and France’s €100 billion investment in train travel by 2040.

This initiative follows the unveiling of “Orient Express – La Dolce Vita,” a collaboration between Arsenale Group and Accor, echoing the opulence of the 1960s.

With increasing infrastructure investments, including the Haramain High-Speed Railway, launched in 2018, Saudi Arabia aims to revolutionise travel within and beyond its borders.

Driven by its Vision 2030 agenda to diversify the economy, Saudi Arabia is doubling down on tourism, with plans to invest over $800 billion by 2030.

The success of recent endeavours and a 56% surge in international arrivals reported in 2023 underscores the kingdom’s commitment to transforming its tourism landscape.

CEO Bashar bin Khaled Al Malik envisions “Dream of the Desert” as a cornerstone of SAR’s mission to offer luxurious transport services, promising an unparalleled experience for visitors and residents alike.

As Saudi Arabia propels its tourism sector forward, the arrival of “Dream of the Desert” heralds a new era of luxury travel, poised to rival iconic global train experiences.

With high hopes for this ambitious project, SAR and Arsenale anticipate setting a new standard in luxury train travel with this groundbreaking endeavour.
