Soweto, South Western Township as it was formally known, is the biggest
township in South Africa.
It formally housed migrant workers from across the
Homelands seeking employment in the city of gold, Johannesburg. It started as a
shanty town but has recalibrated its image into a historical township.
The political role played by the residence of Soweto created what we know today as
the only place in the world to house two Nobel Peace Prize laureates in the same
street, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu.
Soweto is a melting pot of rich history offering great cultural experiences and
entertainment, a travellers’ bucket list is incomplete without this captivating
township tour. BGTN’s Patricia Mantula started the day tour at the Hecter
Peterson Memorial site and museum. This is the site where the June 16 uprising,
now known as Youth Day, was staged. The museum and site have monuments of
remembrance of the occurrences of the day in 1976
