Africa’s growing international statusWhat is the G20?

This development marks a significant step towards fostering greater inclusivity and representation in global economic decision-making.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the AU’s inclusion on the final day of the G20 Summit, hosted in New Delhi this past weekend.

Member nations have rallied in support of the move. Leaders from both the Global North and South have acknowledged the importance of African representation in discussions on critical global issues, including climate change, trade, and economic development.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, “G20 leaders are all in agreement in inviting the leader of the African Union to take his place as a member of the G20.”

Africa’s growing international status

Africa is becoming an increasingly formidable global power. The continent is experiencing rapid economic growth, with a burgeoning middle class, abundant natural resources, and a youthful population.

African nations have also been increasingly assertive in regional and international affairs, driving forward initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

While the path to full membership has been challenging, AU member states were committed to meeting requirements.

This includes demonstrating economic stability, good governance, and fiscal responsibility. The AU is also working to align its economic policies with global standards, ensuring that it can contribute effectively to the G20’s deliberations.

The AU’s inclusion in the G20 signals a new era of global economic cooperation. This development is not just a win for Africa but for the entire international community striving for a fairer and more inclusive global economy.

What is the G20?

The G20, comprised of 19 individual countries and the European Union, has traditionally been dominated by the Global North. The African Union’s pursuit of G20 membership underscores its determination to sit at the table and contribute to shaping global economic policies.
