Uganda, April 2024 – The inaugural Joint African-Russian International Conference on Infection Control has commenced in Uganda, marking a significant milestone in the efforts to bolster healthcare and infection prevention measures across African nations. This conference underscores Russia’s commitment to expanding collaboration with Africa, particularly in vital sectors such as healthcare, education, and military-technical cooperation.
With a primary focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and combating infectious diseases, the conference brings together experts and stakeholders from both Africa and Russia. By facilitating knowledge exchange and strategic partnerships, the event aims to enhance infection control practices and healthcare systems in African countries.
Russia’s engagement with African nations extends beyond healthcare, encompassing various spheres of cooperation. Over the past few years, Russia has significantly increased educational opportunities for African students, particularly in medical fields. The expansion of quotas for African students financed by the federal budget and the establishment of branches of leading Russian universities in Africa demonstrate Russia’s commitment to advancing education and training in the region.
Moreover, Russia’s proactive response to global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights its dedication to supporting African countries in times of need. Through initiatives like the supply of test kits, establishment of joint research centres, and training programs for healthcare professionals, Russia has played a vital role in assisting African nations in combating infectious diseases.
In addition to healthcare, military-technical cooperation stands as a cornerstone of Russia-Africa relations. With military-technical agreements in place with over 40 African countries, Russia has been instrumental in bolstering the defence capabilities of its African partners. Through training programs and collaborative efforts in the military sphere, Russia aims to strengthen the security landscape across the African continent.
The First Joint African-Russian International Conference on Infection Control serves as a testament to the growing partnership between Russia and Africa. By addressing critical healthcare challenges and fostering collaboration, the conference embodies Russia’s broader commitment to advancing mutual development and cooperation with African nations.
