Tokyo, Japan – Chinese state news agency Xinhua has announced plans to enhance collaboration with Japan’s Kyodo News to foster a more positive public perception of China-Japan relations. This move aligns with Beijing’s broader strategy to shape a favorable media narrative between the two nations.

Strengthening Media Cooperation

Xinhua’s President Fu Hua met with Kyodo’s President Toru Mizutani in Tokyo, emphasizing the importance of deepening exchanges, particularly in new media and technology. According to a Xinhua report, Fu stated:

“As leading media organizations in China and Japan, we have actively observed and contributed to the evolution of bilateral ties. We should collaborate to enhance people-to-people exchanges, build trust, and promote the long-term stability of China-Japan relations.”

Mizutani echoed this sentiment, praising the history of cooperation between the two agencies and expressing optimism about strengthening their partnership.

Previous Collaborations & Future Plans

Xinhua launched a Japanese language service in 2018, incorporating content from Kyodo News Digital and Kyodo News Images. The renewed cooperation is expected to further integrate these resources and expand shared content initiatives.

Despite Xinhua’s coverage of the meeting, Kyodo News had not reported on it in English or Chinese as of Tuesday afternoon.

Broader China-Japan Diplomatic Efforts

The meeting between Xinhua and Kyodo follows recent diplomatic engagements between China and Japan. Last month, Li Shulei, head of China’s Communist Party propaganda department, emphasized Beijing’s commitment to fostering a positive public perception of Japan.

While historical tensions persist—ranging from territorial disputes to economic concerns—recent political shifts, including the election of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, indicate a potential thaw in relations. In October, governing parties from both nations met for their first bilateral dialogue in over six years, pledging to strengthen exchanges and maintain close communication.

Japanese Business Delegation Explores Economic Cooperation

A 230-member Japanese business delegation is currently in China for a six-day visit to explore trade and investment opportunities. Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng met with representatives of Japan’s business community, including leaders from:

  • Japan Business Federation (Masakazu Tokura)
  • Japan-China Economic Association (Kosei Shindo)
  • Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Ken Kobayashi)

The delegation seeks greater market access and a level playing field for foreign enterprises in China. Additionally, Japanese business leaders have urged Beijing to address overproduction concerns in industries like steel and electric vehicles.
