The Ismailia Camel Racing Festival 2025 was held in Egypt’s Ismailia Governorate on February 27, drawing participants and spectators from across North Africa and the Middle East. The annual event, staged on the sands near the Suez Canal region, featured dozens of competitive races that highlighted the country’s deep ties to camel culture and its role in regional heritage sports. Camel owners from Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates took part in the festival, bringing racing camels that competed across different age groups and distances. The races emphasized the growing professionalism of camel sports in Egypt, as the country expands its infrastructure and hosts larger events to keep pace with the Gulf states’ dominance in the sport. Spectators filled the stands to watch camels thunder across the desert track, with robot jockeys guiding them to ensure modern standards of fairness and safety. For many visitors, the festival offered both the thrill of competition and a cultural immersion into desert life, with side events that included folk dances, handicraft exhibitions, and Bedouin cuisine. The Ismailia festival also plays an important role in promoting tourism in the canal zone, positioning the governorate as a destination for heritage and adventure experiences. Organizers highlighted the growing interest from international media and travelers, underscoring camel racing’s evolution from a regional tradition into a spectator sport with global recognition. By the close of the festival, winning owners and trainers were honored for their contributions to Egypt’s racing community, while officials praised the event’s success in strengthening cross-border cultural connections. The 2025 edition was hailed as a stepping stone toward positioning Egypt as a leading hub for camel racing in North Africa. (Xinhua)
