Samsun Yurt Savunma Sanayi (SYS), a leading Turkish light weapons manufacturer, has been selected to supply 200 units of the M2HB Quick Change Barrel (QCB) 12.7×99 mm NATO-standard heavy machine guns to the Brazilian Army in a deal valued at $3.1 million. If finalised, this contract would mark a significant milestone for Türkiye’s defence industry in Latin America.

Significance of the Deal This potential agreement underscores Türkiye’s expanding footprint in the global defence sector, particularly in Latin America. Brazil, as a key regional power, is increasingly turning to diverse suppliers for its military needs, positioning Türkiye as a strong contender in the arms trade.

Key Contract Details

  • Scope of Supply: SYS will provide 200 M2HB QCB heavy machine guns designed for NATO-standard compatibility.
  • Intended Deployment: The weapons will be integrated into remote-controlled and manually operated weapon stations on Brazilian Army wheeled armoured vehicles.
  • Planned Equipment Usage: The Brazilian Army aims to mount these machine guns on Guarani 6×6 and Guaicurus 4×4 armored vehicles, with configurations including ARES REMAX 3 and WE Platt MR550 stations.
  • Additional Deployments: Further MR550 units and ARES REMAN manual weapon stations are also set for installation.

Brazil’s Procurement Process

  • In September 2024, the Brazilian Army issued a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for these machine guns.
  • SYS competed with major global manufacturers such as FN Herstal, Aquila International and Ohio Ordnance Works.
  • A technical visit by Brazil’s Army Logistics Command to SYS’s facilities in Türkiye is scheduled for March 2025.

Strategic Impact If finalised, this deal would represent a breakthrough for SYS in the Latin American market, reinforcing Türkiye’s growing influence in global arms exports. The partnership also highlights Brazil’s strategic move to diversify its defence procurement beyond traditional suppliers.
