Brazil moved up to 24th place in terms of world exports in 2023 – up from 26th place the year before. The World Trade Organisation says Brazil’s exports reached US$340 billion last year, accounting for 1.4 per cent of total global trade.

The ranking is led by China, with exports worth US$3.3 trillion. Brazil has now reversed the downward trend of its export status in the official WTO classification in recent years. This comes with the news that Brazil has opened new certified meat production facilities to boost its exports to China.

Over the past 15 months, Brazil has also expanded its market presence by forging trade connections in 105 new markets spanning 50 countries. As a result of this progress, China has approved the addition of 38 new production units to receive imported meat from Brazil, leading to an increase in the total number of plants from 106 to 144.

Amongst the newly certified facilities are twenty-four beef processing plants, eight chicken plants, one beef thermal processing facility, and five warehouses. Together, these approvals are projected to contribute USD 1.96 billion to in the Brazilian trade balance over the next 12 months.

Meanwhile, China is not alone when it comes to exporting Brazilian meat. Brazil has celebrated the opening of the South Korean market to Brazilian exports of animal by-products (such as poultry meal and fats), intended for animal feed. In 2023, South Korea ranked as the eighth destination for certified meat production facilities t, with exports totalling USD 3.37 billion.
