The Chinese Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, hosted a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration that brought together esteemed guests, including H.E Ambassador Chen Xiaodong, Minister Patricia De Lille, Ambassador Dr. S. C. Cwele, and Princess Ntando Zulu. The event was not only a cultural extravaganza but also an occasion to highlight the robust bilateral relations between China and South Africa.

The festivities were graced by Chinese individuals from diverse fields who call South Africa home, adding a touch of warmth and community spirit to the celebration. Attendees were treated to traditional performances, delectable Chinese cuisine, and a rich display of cultural traditions that marked the onset of the Year of the Wooden Dragon.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Chen Xiaodong emphasized the thriving sectors in China, providing insight into the nation’s economic prowess. He underscored China’s achievements in various fields, including being a leading grain producer, advancements in the automotive industry, steel production, and the home appliances sector. Ambassador Chen’s remarks painted a vivid picture of China’s economic resilience and its contributions to global industries.

Minister Patricia De Lille also took the stage, commending the Chinese New Year celebration as a symbol of the enduring friendship between South Africa and China. She praised China’s exceptional diplomacy and acknowledged the positive impact it has had on fostering collaboration and mutual understanding between nations.

Ambassador Dr. S. C. Cwele, another distinguished guest at the event, highlighted the historic relations between China and South Africa. He emphasized the positive outcomes of this longstanding partnership, including the boost in tourism, economic gains, and an extended global reach for both nations.

Princess Ntando Zulu, adding a touch of royalty to the celebration, expressed her appreciation for the cultural exchange and the opportunities it provides for strengthening ties between the two countries. Her presence symbolized the inclusivity and diversity inherent in the diplomatic relations between China and South Africa.

The Chinese New Year event at the embassy served not only as a festive celebration but also as a platform to showcase the multifaceted connections between China and South Africa. As the two nations continue to collaborate in various domains, the shared history, economic gains, and global outreach stand as a testament to the enduring strength of their partnership. The celebration encapsulated the spirit of unity and cooperation that defines the bilateral relationship, promising a prosperous and harmonious future ahead.

The last five rainy seasons since the end of 2020 have failed, triggering the worst drought in four decades in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. And the next rainy season, from March to May, is also expected to be below average. According to the UN, drought has plunged 12 million people into "acute food insecurity" in Ethiopia alone, where a deadly conflict has also ravaged the north of the country.
