A search and rescue operation is underway in Azerbaijan, after a state helicopter carrying Iran President Ebrahim Raisi went down in bad weather conditions.

State media is reporting there’d been “an accident” in the Jofa region of East Azerbaijan, in a remote mountain area.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and local officials were also on board the helicopter.

The president was in the province to inaugurate a dam project together with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliev, on the border between the two countries.

Search and rescue efforts are being hampered by harsh weather conditions as heavy fog is making it difficult to reach the accident site.

It’s understood communication with the helicopter has been lost.
