Get ready for a journey through the vibrant world of Cantonese cuisine — where every bite tells a delicious story. Let’s dive into the magic of tender chicken, infused with aromatic spices and love!

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken (about 4-5 pounds)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Rinse the chicken inside and out, then pat it dry with paper towels.
  3. In a bowl, mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, sesame oil, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, salt, and pepper. This will be the marinade for your chicken.
  4. Rub the chicken inside and out with the marinade. Make sure to get the marinade under the skin for more flavor.
  5. Let the chicken marinate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight in the refrigerator.
  6. After marinating, tie the chicken legs together with kitchen twine and tuck the wings under the body.
  7. Brush the chicken with vegetable oil and place it on a roasting rack in a roasting pan.
  8. Roast in the preheated oven for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), basting with the pan juices every 30 minutes.
  9. Once done, let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving.
