Thousands of residents in a village east of Rustenburg in South Africa’s North West Province say they are living in fear of contracting cholera and other deadly diseases because of the water provided by one of the mines to the locals.

The mine supplies borehole water to 12 villages with residents of Maditlokwa noticing color changes, a chalk-like substance, and little black stones coming directly from their taps.

This has raised concerns about possible chromium pollution.

Residents have also complained about consistent diarrhea from the water.

Some residents say another mine nearby that gets its supply from Rand Water is offering to assist with drinkable water.

Meanwhile, water tests conducted by an independent lab show high volumes of E. coli
