As Chair of the BRICS group of nations, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to convene a significant BRICS Extraordinary Joint Meeting on the Middle East Situation in Gaza on Tuesday.
The virtual gathering will see leaders from the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – engaging in discussions with invited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the opening remarks, providing a platform for member and invited states to present their country statements on the current situation in Gaza. Adding a global perspective to the discussions, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will actively participate in the virtual meeting. As the meeting progresses, leaders are anticipated to unite in adopting a Joint Statement on the Middle East situation, explicitly emphasising the crisis in Gaza.
