South African Airways (SAA) has resumed its first direct flight route to Brazil since the COVID-19 pandemic. The new route aims to strengthen economic ties between the BRICS member nations and enhance tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.

The announcement comes after South Africa played host to the 2023 BRICS Summit. The direct flights to Brazil will represent the carrier’s first intercontinental route since it emerged from bankruptcy two years ago.

The new route is a significant achievement for the airline, which was grounded for 16 months before undergoing business rescue and avoiding liquidation. The intercontinental relaunch route to Brazil will open the south-to-south corridor for travel and trade.

South African Airways will be flying out of Cape Town, which is a new development.

The decision to launch the new route reflects the deepening relationships between Brazil and African nations across multiple sectors. The shortened travel times and added convenience are expected to amplify these ties and guarantee the growth of tourism and commerce.

The resumption of direct flights between the two countries has received high appreciation from Patricia de Lille, the South African Tourism Minister. The local airline was praised for relaunching direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The newly established route signifies the airline’s first intercontinental link between South America and Africa since resuming operations in September 2021.

The new route is expected to bring huge benefits to both countries. The market in Brazil is very buoyant, with a massive population of more than 220 million people. There are solid trade links between South African Airways and Brazil regarding agricultural products.

The new route will facilitate the connection between Africa and Brazil, making travelling to Brazilian destinations easier than ever.

The return of South African Airways flights to São Paulo is a positive development for travellers and the airline. Still, it also highlights the vital connection between the BRICS bloc and the Global South.
