Cape Town: The Africa Conference has highlighted technology’s critical role in shaping Africa’s future.

CGTN’s Julie Scheier reports on the challenges and potential solutions discussed at the Africa Tech Festival.

Africa, boasting the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population, faces significant hurdles in providing adequate learning opportunities in the technology sector, or sometimes none at all, for its youth.

With high inequality and limited prospects, particularly in South Africa, where youth unemployment rates are among the highest globally, reaching 61% for those under 25, there is a pressing need for actionable solutions.

The Africa Tech Festival, the largest of its kind on the continent, tackled issues of connectivity, digital inclusion, enterprise transformation, and emerging technologies.

Experts at the conference emphasised the transformative potential of technology in Africa, citing its ability to change lives, uplift societies, and drive economic development.

Tom Cuthwell, Vice President of Global Festivals at Informa Tech, highlighted Africa’s significance in the tech sector, stating, “Africa is the place to be for the next decade.”

Ayanda Siboto, Managing Director of Informally Digital Communications, emphasised the challenge of bridging the digital divide, especially in developing 21st-century skills among South African youth. She noted that many graduates lack the necessary technological proficiency to either employ themselves or become employable.

Chinese companies, including global technology leader Huawei, are playing a vital role in shaping Africa’s digital future by enhancing connectivity and ensuring widespread access.

Yoyo Chen, Vice President of Tozed Kangwei Intelligent Technology, highlighted the wireless capabilities of their products, contributing to connectivity in various settings.

John Zhao, Regional Sales Director at StarWin, expressed optimism about the continent’s future, particularly in satellite communication. He highlighted advancements in technology, including new-generation field antennas and flat panel antennas.

Affordable and innovative tech from China is seen as a game-changer for Africa. Ayanda Siboto praised the affordability of Chinese tech, making it accessible to citizens with lower income levels.
