Kim’s first state visit in four years
This is Kim’s first state visit in four years and since the Covid-19 pandemic. He last visited Russia in April 2019.
While there are no details about the visit, except to ‘talk’, speculation is rife that Pyongyang might bolster Russia’s nuclear capacity.
Both countries face harsh economic sanctions from the US and may find common ground as economic outsiders globally.
On Saturday, Putin sent greetings on the occasion of the Liberation Day of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
“This holiday symbolises the courage and heroism of the Red Army soldiers and Korean patriots who fought together to liberate your country from Japanese colonial rule,” said Putin.
“It was during that harsh war period that traditions of friendship and cooperation were established, which became a reliable basis for the development of neighbourly relations between the Russian Federation and the DPRK.”
Putin wants to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas to benefit people in both countries.
