Brazil has achieved the historic feat of becoming the world’s largest producer and exporter of cotton in the 2023/2024 harvest. The exceptional harvest of more than 3.7 million tonnes was announced at the 75th meeting of the Industry Chamber of the Cotton Production Chain in Comandatuba.
Miguel Faus, president of the National Association of Cotton Exporters, says Brazil’s transformation from a major importer to a world leader was the result of investments in research and development. The recovery of Brazilian exports is driven by demand from countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh – with China, Vietnam, Turkiye and others as major markets.
In addition, Brazil has expanded its poultry market by obtaining a sanitary authorisation to export poultry feathers from a region in China, indicating confidence in the country’s sanitary controls. The quality of Brazilian poultry and the efficiency of Brazil’s chicken production has made the country one of the world’s largest poultry exporters and producers.
About a third of all Brazilian chicken produced is exported – 4.2m out of 13.8m tonnes in 2020 – to over 150 countries worldwide. Brazil is the second-largest chicken meat producer in the world after the United States, and the largest chicken meat exporter in the world. Meat production increased three percent by the end of 2023 and reached 14.9 million metric tons. Production was then expected to increase one percent in 2024, reaching nearly 15.1 MMT.
These forecasts are a record for Brazil and are based on strong external demand, socio-economic performance, and improved costs of production. Brazil also continues to maintain its status as free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in commercial plants.
