Libya, the City of Derna destroyed

Storm Daniel pummeled through Libya’s coastal city, Derna, home to an estimated 100,000 people.

Torrential rains swept through several regions, most notably the cities of Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj and Soussa.

WATCH: From dessert to flooded

Many were asleep when the powerful torrential flooding of Storm Daniel swept away their homes.

During the floods, residents scrambled to reach higher ground, climbing atop buildings to escape the heavy water gushing violently through the streets.

Those who managed to get to building rooftops survived the storms.

Two dams and four bridges have been destroyed. At least 5500 are reported to have died in Derna, and 10’s of thousands of people are missing. There are fears many of these people may have been swept out to sea.

Locals are now combing through mud and rubble, searching for their loved ones.

I haven’t been able to stop watching footage of the floods ripping through Libya. I can’t imagine being one of the many who still have not heard back from their relatives. I remember the raging waters of hurricane Katrina. I’ve never seen anything like this. So many in the last… pic.twitter.com/TvFUcRYsci

A putrid scent has been reported in the streets due to decomposing bodies that rescue teams retrieved. The morgues are filled to capacity, and corpses are being kept in a safe area of the city.

Rescue teams from Turkiye, Italy and France are working nearby, but the amount of bodies that need to be retrieved is said to be overwhelming for the teams.
