As Chair of the BRICS group of nations, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to convene a significant BRICS Extraordinary Joint Meeting on the Middle East Situation in Gaza on Tuesday.
The virtual gathering will see leaders from the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – engaging in discussions with invited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The meeting aims to address the pressing humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the opening remarks, providing a platform for member and invited states to present their country statements on the current situation in Gaza. The focus will be on fostering dialogue and collaboration among nations to address the urgent challenges faced by the region.
Adding a global perspective to the discussions, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will actively participate in the virtual meeting. As the meeting progresses, leaders are anticipated to unite in adopting a Joint Statement on the Middle East situation, explicitly emphasising the crisis in Gaza.
This extraordinary meeting underscores the commitment of BRICS nations, along with their invited counterparts, to collective efforts in finding comprehensive and sustainable solutions to the complex issues in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza. The collaborative approach seeks to promote peace, stability, and humanitarian assistance in the region.
