Rugby World Cup: The mind games have begun just a few days before the quarter-final meeting, with hosts France looming large.

South Africa’s Director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, stopped short of accusing France of “simulation” tactics at a press conference on Tuesday evening.

“I think the French are not playing a reckless game where they are on the edge of being too physical,’ said Erasmus.

The 50-year-old is no stranger to making headlines and is known for his no-nonsense approach to the sport.

“What they do well is that when they get close to the high hits, they show that to the referee,” Erasmus added.

Sold-out Stade de France

Mindgames or not, the Springboks have admitted they have no choice but to embrace a hostile reception from a sold-out Stade de France during Sunday’s World Cup quarter-final against France.

France has done well in the World Cup so far. They have captured the hearts of their nation. Over 80,000 fans are expected at Stade de France for their biggest game of the tournament.

France was the runner-up at the Rugby World Cup finals in 1987,1999, and 2011, with captain Antoine Dupont’s return to full training before his side’s quarter-final against South Africa.

Les Bleus will fancy their chances of lifting the Webb Ellis trophy on home soil this time.

Asked about Dupont’s potential return, Springbok scrumhalf Faf De Klerk said: “He’s a great player, and he gives the team a lot of confidence. But it doesn’t affect us if he plays or doesn’t. We prepare to face the team, not individuals. That said, for me, it’s always good to face the world’s best.”

Come Sunday night, the Boks will be under pressure to beat France from Rugby-obsessed fans back home.

To top it all, match officials on the night are all New Zealanders.

Referee: Ben O’Keeffe (NZR)

Assistant Referee 1: Paul Williams (NZR)

Assistant Referee 2: James Doleman (NZR)

TMO: Brendon Pickerill (NZR)

O’Keeffe will lead an all-New Zealand team for the fourth quarter-final between South Africa and tournament hosts France on Sunday, with Paul Williams and James Doleman as assistants. The TMO is Brendon Pickerill.
