India: Laddoo Recipe for Ganesha Pooja

Laddoos are said to be the favourite sweetmeat of the elephant-headed deity, Lord Ganesha.

In this unique tradition, devotees craft an idol of Lord Ganesha entirely from laddoos, round sweet treats made from various ingredients.

The laddoos symbolise prosperity and the fulfilment of wishes, attributes that Lord Ganesha is believed to bestow upon his devotees.


Laddoos are sweet treats made from various ingredients like flour, gram flour, semolina, and more. One of the most popular varieties is Besan Laddoo, which is made from chickpea flour. Enjoy this quick and easy Ladoo Recipe.

Ingredients:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups besan (chickpea flour)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, or pistachios)
  • A pinch of saffron strands (optional for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Roasting the Besan: Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on low to medium heat. Add the ghee to the pan and let it melt.
  2. Once the ghee is melted, add the besan to it. Stir well to combine the ghee and besan.
  3. Continuously stir the mixture on low to medium heat. Keep stirring to ensure even roasting. The besan will start to change colour and emit a nutty aroma. This process can take around 15-20 minutes.
  4. Roast the besan until it turns a light golden brown. Be patient and keep stirring to prevent it from burning.
  5. Once the besan is roasted, turn off the heat and let it cool slightly.
  6. Add the powdered sugar and cardamom powder to the roasted besan. Mix well to combine.
  7. While the mixture is still warm, shape small portions into round laddoos. You can grease your hands with a little ghee to prevent sticking.
  8. Garnish each laddoo with a chopped nut or a strand of saffron.
  9. Allow the laddoos to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container.

Serve and enjoy! You can make variations of laddoos using other ingredients like coconut, semolina, or wheat flour.
