The Qatar Camel Festival 2025 opened at Al Shahaniya Racetrack on January 29, 2025, bringing together competitors from across the Gulf region for three weeks of racing, heritage activities and cultural celebrations. The event, which ran until February 21, featured elite camels competing across multiple racing categories, underscoring Qatar’s commitment to preserving its traditions while elevating the sport to international prominence. Organised by the Camel Racing Organising Committee, the festival offered a platform for camel owners and trainers to showcase the speed and stamina of their animals. Races were structured to highlight both professional stables and smaller, independent owners, ensuring widespread participation that celebrated the communal nature of camel racing in Qatari society. In addition to racing, the festival hosted traditional markets, falconry displays, and cultural exhibitions, providing spectators with an immersive look at Qatari heritage. These side events transformed Al Shahaniya into more than just a racetrack, it became a cultural hub where families, tourists, and sports enthusiasts engaged with centuries-old desert traditions. The 2025 edition also drew notable attention for its use of modern technologies, including digital tracking of race times and live broadcasts across regional television networks. This integration of innovation into an ancient sport reflects Qatar’s broader strategy of merging tradition with modernity, particularly in the run-up to other major cultural and sporting events on the national calendar. By the festival’s closing on February 21, winners across various race categories were awarded substantial cash prizes and recognition, reinforcing the competitive prestige of the event. Organisers hailed the turnout and international interest as evidence of camel racing’s growing appeal beyond the Gulf, as Qatar continues to position itself as a cultural and sporting hub in the region.
