This marks a historic first: South Africa will not only host the G20 under its Presidency but will also become the first African nation to chair and convene the summit since the G20’s inception.

The Role of the G20 in Global Stability

The G20, representing the world’s largest economies, plays a pivotal role in shaping and strengthening global governance on critical international economic issues. Its agenda spans economic stability, sustainable growth, trade, financial markets, climate action and inclusive development.

As the global community faces persistent challenges from geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions to the climate crisis and digital transformation this year’s summit carries profound significance.

A Defining Moment for Africa

South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 reflects both its global leadership and the growing recognition of Africa’s role in the global economy. Hosting the summit in Johannesburg creates an opportunity to:

  • Elevate African priorities on trade, energy access and development financing.
  • Promote investment in sustainable infrastructure across emerging markets.
  • Advance inclusive growth models that address inequality and youth unemployment.
  • Strengthen global partnerships between developed and developing economies.

“This is more than just a summit, it is a milestone for Africa and a chance to demonstrate the continent’s role as a partner in shaping solutions for global prosperity,”

Global Leaders Converge in Johannesburg

The summit is expected to draw Heads of State, Finance Ministers, Central Bank Governors, CEOs and global thought leaders from across the G20 member nations. With South Africa at the helm, discussions are likely to place strong emphasis on bridging divides between advanced economies and the Global South, ensuring that development remains sustainable, inclusive and resilient.

Looking Forward

As anticipation builds, the G20 South Africa 2025 Presidency signals a transformative moment for both the country and the continent. For the first time, the African continent will be at the centre of global economic decision-making, setting the stage for long-term collaboration and shared prosperity.
