Proteas’ Netball World Cup hopes dashed

The South African Netball World Cup team is no longer in the running for the top spot. despite beating Uganda, the Proteas’ defeat at the hands of Jamaica put an end to their World Cup Ambitions.

This comes after they stunned crowd and managed a draw against defending champions New Zealand in their last match.

“Yeah, we just love our fans… We are really, really, really grateful for them, because people from all around the world say we’ve got the best fans and I agree with them.” said Shadine van der Merwe, a member of the national squad that finished 5th at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the team that finished fourth at the 2019 Netball World Cup.

Fans of the home team have packed the Cape Town International Convention Centre, to show their support for the girls in green and gold.

As South Africa Celebrates its Women’s Month The team’s football counterparts, Banyana Banyana pressed pause on their own World Cup ambitions and wished them luck before their match against New Zealand earlier this week.

Currently, all four top ranked teams have are through to the semifinals of the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town.

England who are ranked number three in the world will take on defending champions New Zealand.   

Top ranking Australia who are number one will face fourth seat, Jamaica on Saturday. These are the only countries to have played at every World Cup since 1963.

The Proteas will play against Tonga tonight at 18:00 CAT to determine who will advance to Sunday’s playoff for fifth and sixth position. The winner of this match will Face-off against the winner between Malawi and Uganda.

This means for the fans to see another epic battle like the one they just witnessed on Thursday night where South Africa narrowly defeated Uganda by 2 points.
