Critics complain his handling of the electricity crisis amounts to neglect, but the president insists the country is well on its way to transitioning to renewable energy. Since the revival of this program, Ramaphosa said, South Africa has connected more than 2500 MW of solar and wind power to the grid.

“We are going to build more than 14,000 kilometers of new transmission lines to accommodate renewable energy over the coming years”

But it comes at a cost. The country is experiencing stage 4 power cuts which means there is no electricity in different neighbourhoods for 4 hours out of 12 hours.

Ramaphosa also announced that South Africa had adopted new legislation to strengthen its ability to prevent money laundering and fraud. He was confident that this would help the country be removed from a greylisting by the Financial Action Task Force.

South Africa has also established a digital forensic capability to support the National Prosecuting Authority investigative directorate, Ramaphosa said.
