The South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has officially placed paralympian Oscar Pistorius on parole, effective January 5, 2024.

Pistorius, initially convicted of culpable homicide in 2014, underwent a series of appeals that concluded with a ratified sentence of 13 years and five months in 2017.

Pistorius opened fire on his girlfriend, who was in the bathroom at his upmarket Pretoria residence on Valentine’s Day that same year.

“The decision for parole placement comes after evaluation by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB), which thoroughly assessed Pistorius’ profile and submitted materials for parole consideration,” said the department.

Pistorius is classified as a first-time offender.

His parole placement aligns with Section 73 of the Correctional Services Act.

“This decision is critical to the broader rehabilitation program designed to correct offending behaviour and facilitate reintegration,” said the department.

The blade runner will serve the remaining sentence under community corrections, subject to supervision to ensure compliance with parole conditions until the sentence expires.

“This approach reflects the commitment to a holistic rehabilitation process for individuals within the correctional system,” said the department.
