Iran on April 14 urged Israel not to retaliate militarily to an unprecedented attack overnight, which Tehran presented as a justified response to a deadly strike on its consulate building in Damascus.

The United States has confirmed that Israel attacked Iran in the latest tit-for-tat exchange between the two countries. Iranian media reported explosions, but an Iranian official told Reuters those were caused by air defence systems. State media says three drones were shot down over the central city of Isfahan.

Israel has not yet commented on the attack. The attack came days after Iran launched a missile and drone strike on Israel in response to an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, where seven people were killed – including two top Iranian commanders.

The US and a number of other countries had advised Israel not to retaliate, fearing an escalation of tensions in the region. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had warned Israel that Tehran would deliver a “severe response” to any attack on its territory. There are no details on the possible extent of damage or possible casualties after the latest attack.

However, Iran says its nuclear facilities were not affected. The escalation of tensions in the region began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel killing over 1200 people. Israel responded with attacks in Gaza with the latest figures putting the death toll at more than 33 000. Iran-backed groups have declared support for the Palestinians, launching attacks from Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq.
