The conflict in northern Mozambique appears to be continuing – even after “mission accomplished” was declared by the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).

Rwandan forces are now set to take over in the natural gas rich Northern province, Cabo Delgado

Since 2019, Jihadist insurgents – calling themselves the AL- Sunnah group, have tried to infiltrate the area.

Reports say more than 800 000 civilians have been displaced by the fighting.

The Cabo Delgado Province is famous for its natural guess reserves worth billions.

French energy giant Total declared force majeure on its multibillion-dollar project, formally withdrawing all its employees.

SADC troops then moved in to combat group – fearing that others such as the Islamic State would get a bridgehead to expand operations.

But now, the Southern African body believes it has fulfilled its mission hence the exit.

However, since the second half of 2023, the number of attacks has increased.

This will not be the first time that Rwandan forces have joined the fight for control of Cabo Delgado.

In 2021, Rwandan forces took back control of roads, towns, and the Mocumboada port from jihadists sending them into the dense jungle for cover.

The recent deployment is set to be funded by the European Union.

Rwandan forces have helped bring calm to Cabo Delgado, but pockets of violence remain.
